  Abstract Passive (wetland) treatment of waters draining abandoned and derelict mine sites has a number of detrac-tions. Detailed knowledge of many of the fundamental processes that dictate the performance and longevity of constructed systems is currently very limited and therefore more research effort is needed before passive treatment becomes an “off-the-shelf” technology.

  Abstract Acidic spoil-heap drainage, containing elevated concentrations of iron, aluminium and manganese, has been polluting the Stanley Burn in County Durham for nearly two decades. Following the success of a pilot-scale wetland (the first application of its kind in Europe), a full-scale wetland was installed. Waste manures and composts have been used as the main substrate which is contained within embankments constructed from compacted pulverized fuel ash. The constructed wetland, which cost less than £20,000 to build, has consistently reduced iron and aluminium concentrations and has markedly lowered the acidity of the drainage. A third phase of activities at the site aims to identify and eliminate pollutant-release 'hot spots' within the spoil.

  Abstract Überblick über einschlägige Verfahren zum Ausfällen der sauren Betandteile, Entfernen der Schwermetalle, und Einstellen des pH-Wertes auf einen Wert von 6 bis 9. Hauptsächliche Verfahren zum Ausfällen sind: Ausfällen mit Kalkhydrat (Ca(OH)2), mit Kalkstein, Calcium- oder Natriumsulfid. Durch Abtrennen des Niederschlages in einem Kläreindicker und zusätzliche Reinigung durch Filtrieren kann ein Anteil von 90% der unlöslichen Schwermetallverbindungen entfernt werden. Allgemein wird mit diesem Verfahren ein Standardgehalt von 5 mg/l erreicht. Durch zusätzliche Anwendung physikochemischer Verfahren kann der Schwermetallgehalt weiter gesenkt werden: Mikrofiltration, Umkehrosmose, Elektrodialyse, Ionenaustausch, biochemische und spezielle chemische Verfahren können je nach Eigenart der Grubenwässer verwendet werden.

  Abstract Agricultural soils irrigated with acidic mine water from the Guangdong Dabaoshan Mine, China, were investigated. The pH of the soils could be as low as 3.9. However, most of the mineral acids introduced into the soils by irrigation were transformed to insoluble forms through acid buffering processes and thus temporarily stored in the soils. Different heavy metals exhibited different fraction distribution patterns, with Zn and Cu being mainly associated with organic matter and Pb being primarily bound to oxides (statistically significant at P = 0.05). Although the mean of exchangeable Cd was greatest among the Cd fractions, there was no statistically significant difference between the exchangeable Cd and the oxide-bound Cd (the 2nd greatest fraction) or between the exchangeable Cd and the carbonate-bound Cd (the 3rd greatest fraction). It was also found that there were generally good relationships between the concentrations of various Zn, Cu, Pb, and Cd fractions and pH, suggesting that a major proportion of each heavy metal in the soils was mainly derived from the acidic irrigation water. The results also show that the crops grown in these soils were highly contaminated by heavy metals, particularly Cd. The concentration of Cd in the edible portions of most crops was far in excess of the limits set in China National Standards for Vegetables and Fruits and this can be attributable to the extremely high transfer rate of Cd from the soils to the crops under the cropping system adopted in the study area. < copyright > CSIRO 2005.
