Abstract |
Acid mine drainage (AMD) causes environmental pollution that affects many countries having historic or current mining industries. Preventing the formation or the migration of AMD from its source is generally considered to be the preferable option, although this is not feasible in many locations, and in such cases, it is necessary to collect, treat, and discharge mine water. There are various options available for remediating AMD, which may be divided into those that use either chemical or biological mechanisms to neutralise AMD and remove metals from solution. Both abiotic and biological systems include those that are classed as “active” (i.e., require continuous inputs of resources to sustain the process) or “passive” (i.e., require relatively little resource input once in operation). This review describes the current abiotic and bioremediative strategies that are currently used to mitigate AMD and compares the strengths and weaknesses of each. New and emerging technologies are also described. In addition, the factors that currently influence the selection of a remediation system, and how these criteria may change in the future, are discussed. |

Abstract |
A waste dump formed during the exploitation of quartzite deposit in Sobov mine (Slovakia) produces large quantity of acid mine drainage (AMD) which is mainly a product of pyrite oxidation. Sulphuric acid--the most aggressive oxidation product--attacks gangue minerals, mainly clays, as well. This process lead to a sharp decrease of the pH values (2-2.5) and increase of Fe, Al and SO (super 2-) (sub 4) contents (TDS = 20-30 mg/1). Passive treatment system was designed to remediate AMD. Chemical redox reactions along with microbial activity cause a precipitation of mobile contamination into a more stable forms. The sulphides are formed in the anaerobic cell, under reducing conditions. Fe-, Al- oxyhydroxides are precipitated in the aerobic part of the system. Precipitation decreases the Fe and Al contents along with immobilization of some heavy metal closely related to oxyhydroxides. Besides oxidation, the wetland vegetation is an active part of on aerobic cell. The system has been working effectively since September 1999. The pH values of outflowing water are apparently higher (6.2-6.8) and contents of dissolved elements (Fe from 2.260 to 4.1; Al from 900 to 0.18; Mn from 51 to 23; Cu from 4.95 to 0.03 mg/l) is significantly lowers. |

Abstract |
This study investigated the ability of a 10-yr-old constructed wetland to treat metal-contaminated leachate emanating from a coal ash pile at the Widows Creek electric utility, Alabama (USA). The two vegetated cells, which were dominated by cattail (Typha latifolia L.) and soft rush (Juncus effusus L.), were very effective at removing Fe and Cd from the wastewater, but less efficient for Zn, S, B, and Mn. The concentrations were decreased by up to 99% for Fe, 91% for Cd, 63% for Zn, 61% for S, 58% for Mn, and 50% for B. Higher pH levels (>6) in standing water substantially improved the removing efficiency of the wetland for Mn only. The belowground tissues of both cattail and soft rush had high concentrations of all elements; only for Mn, however, did the concentration in the shoots exceed those in the belowground tissues. The concentrations of trace elements in fallen litter were higher than in the living shoots, but lower than in the belowground tissues. ne trace element accumulation in the plants accounted for less than 2.5% of the annual loading of each trace element into the wetland. The sediments were the primary sinks for the elements removed from the wastewater. Except for Mn, the concentrations of trace elements in the upper layer (0-5 cm) of the sediment profile tended to be higher than the lower layers (5-10 and 10-15 cm). We conclude that constructed wetlands are still able to efficiently remove metals in the long term (i.e., >10 yr after construction). |
