Abstract: Decades of atmospheric acid deposition have resulted in widespread lake and river acidification in the northeastern U.S. Biological effects of acidification include increased mortality of sensitive aquatic species Such as the endangered Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). The purpose of this paper is to describe the development of a limestone-based fluidized bed system for the treatment of acid-impacted waters. The treatment system was tested at the Craig Brook National Fish Hatchery in East Orland, Maine over a period of 3 years. The product water from the treatment system was diluted with hatchery water to prepare water supplies with three different levels of alkalinity for testing of fish health and Survival. Based on positive results from a prototype system used in the first year of the study, a larger demonstration system was used in the second and third years with the objective of decreasing operating costs. Carbon dioxide was used to accelerate limestone dissolution, and was the major factor in system performance, as evidenced by the model result: Alk = 72.84 X P(CO2)(1/2); R-2 = 0.975. No significant acidic incursions were noted for the control water over the course of the Study. Had these incursions occurred, survivability in the untreated water would likely have been much more severely impacted. Treated water consistently provided elevated alkalinity and pH above that of the hatchery source water. (C) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: Constructed wetlands are built because they can act as sinks fur many pollutants, thereby protecting the water quality of downstream ecosystems. The treatment performance is generally assessed using mass balance calculations. Along with the mass balance approach, we compared the metal content of populations of a common pond snail (Helisoma trivolvis Say) collected upstream and downstream of a 3-year-old constructed wetland. Snails were collected in early May, June, and August 1998. At the same time, water samples for particulate and dissolved metals were taken every 3 days for the duration of the experiment. Overall, the wetland retained most dissolved metals, including Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, Ni, and Pb, but released dissolved As. However, the wetland released particulate Fe and Mn. With the exception of Zn, the metal concentrations of the downstream snails were on average higher than those measured in the upstream population. The higher metal content of downstream snails was likely related to the significant export of particulate metals by the wetland, despite the overall retention of dissolved metals. This study points to the need for biological as well as chemical monitoring to determine the treatment efficiency and toxicological risk associated with constructed wetlands.

Abstract: Applied Biosciences has developed a biological technology for removal of arsenic, nitrate, selenium, and other metals from mining and industrial waste waters. The ABMet((R)) technology was implemented at a closed gold mine site in Canada for removing arsenic from tailings pond water. The system included six bioreactors that began treating water in the spring of 2004. Design criteria incorporated a maximum flow of 567 L/min (150 gallons per minute) and water temperatures ranging from 10 degrees C to 15 degrees C. Influent arsenic concentrations range from 0.5 mg/L to 1.5 mg/L. The ABMet((R)) technology consistently removes arsenic to below detection limits (0.02 mg/L). Data from the full scale system will be presented, as well as regulatory requirements and site specific challenges.

Abstract: A pilot-scale study on the effect of flooding unoxidized and oxidized Cu/Zn tailings demonstrated the technical feasability of this technology to remediate a mining site where over 3 million tons of tailings were impounded. Full-scale flooding of the tailing pond with free running water was undertaken after the construction of an impervious dam; approximately 2 million m(3) of surface water at pH 7,4 completely covered the tailings after 16 months. The minimal water column over the tailings was established at 1,20 m and reached 4,5 m, depending on the site topography. Water and tailings samples were collected from 9 different locations from the surface of the man-made lake using a specially designed borer and were analyzed for pH, conductivity, iron- and sulfur-oxidizing bacteria activity and numbers as well as the sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) population. We showed that over a four year period of flooding, the overall population of iron-oxidizers decreased considerably; their numbers drastically fell from 1 x 10(6) to 1 x 10(2) active cells per g of oxidized tailings while the SRBs increased from 10(1) to 10(5)/g. The pH of the influent, the reservoir and the effluent water remained fairly constant between 6,9 up to 7,4 over the entire period. During this time, interstitial water pH increased from 2,9 to 4,3 in flooded tailings where lime could not be incorporated in the first 20 cm of tailings; elsewhere, the pH of the tailings suspensions remained fairly constant around neutral values (pH 7,0). Dissolved oxygen was measured at fixed intervals and remained also constant between 6 and 7.5 mg/L while water temperatures fluctuated below freezing point to +20C respectively in winter and summer season.

Abstract: In this paper experience obtained with THIOPAQ technology treating Acid Mine Drainage is described. THIOPAQ Technology involves biological sulfate reduction technology and the removal of heavy metals as metal sulfide precipitates. The technology was developed by the PAQUES company, who have realised over 350 high rate biological treatment plants world wide. 5 plants specially designed for sulfate reduction are successfully operated on a continuous base (1998 status).
