Abstract |
The acidification of mine waters is generally caused by metal sulfide oxidation, related to mining activities. These waters are characterized by low pH and high acidity due to strong buffering systems. The standard acidity parameter, the BNC (Base Neutralization Capacity), is determined by endpoint titration, and reflects a cumulative parameter of both hydrogen ions and all buffering systems, but does not give information on the individual buffer systems. It is demonstrated that a detailed interpretation of titration curves can provide information about the strength of the buffering systems. The buffering systems are of importance for environmental studies and treatment of acidic mining waters. Titrations were carried out by means of an automatic titrator using acidic mining waters from Germany and Canada. The curves were interpreted, compared with each other, to endpoint titration results and to elemental concentrations contained therein. The titration curves were highly reproducible, and contained information about the strength of the buffer systems present. Interpretations are given, and the classification and comparison of acidic mining waters, by the nature and strength of their buffering systems derived from titration curves are discussed. The BNC-values calculated from the curves were more precise than the ones determined by the standard endpoint titration method. Due to the complex buffer mechanisms in acidic mining waters, the calculation of major metal concentrations from the shape of the titration curve resulted in estimates, which should not be confused with precise elemental analysis results. Conclusion. Titration curves provide an inexpensive, valuable and versatile tool, by which to obtain sophisticated information of the acidity in acidic water. The information about the strength of the present buffer systems can help to understand and document the complex nature of acidic mining water buffer systems. Finally, the interpretation of titration curves could help to improve treatment measurements and the ecological understanding of these acidic waters. |

Abstract |
In einem US-amerikanischen Minenbetrieb fallen bei der Auslaugung von Abraum zur Gewinnung von Restkupfer Abwässer an, die höhere Konzentrationen aufweisen als für Abwässer erlaubt ist. Eine bislang angewandte chemische Fällung erforderte erhebliche Kosten. Mit der Nanofiltration (NF), verbunden mit einer Biomasse-Adsorptionsstufe, erhält man ein weniger problematisches Abwasser, das direkt eingeleitet werden darf. Dieses Wasser kann im Betrieb sogar als Frischwasser dort eingesetzt werden, wo höhere Anteile an Silikaten toleriert werden können. Ein weiterer Vorteil der NF-Technik ist die Aufkonzentration der Metallsalze und die Rückgewinnung von Schwefelsäure. Kupfer liegt z.B. nach der ersten Stufe in solcher Konzentration vor, daß die Extraktionskapazität der existierenden Anlage stark erhöht wird. Die Nanofiltration ist ein Membranprozeß, bei dem Membranen mit Porengrößen von ca. 1 nm eingesetzt werden. Die Porengröße ist kleiner als bei Ultrafiltrationsverfahren und nur wenig größer als bei Umkehrosmosemembranen. Gearbeitet wird mit dem Prinzip der Queranströmung (Crossflow). Zur Entfernung der relativ geringen Anteile an Schwermetallen wird zusätzlich eine Biomasse-Kolonne eingesetzt. Beschrieben wird der Aufbau bzw. das Fließschema einer Pilotanlage. Untersuchungen mit dieser Anlage bestätigten die Wirksamkeit der NF- Abwasserbehandlung mit anschließender Adsorption an Biomasse. Die zugeführten Chemikalien bestehen lediglich aus relativ harmlosen Stoffen wie Entkrustungsmittel und Soda. Das Entkrustungsmittel wird benötigt, um Ablagerungen von Anorganika auf den Membranen zu verhindern. Das Soda neutralisiert das aufbereitete Wasser. Beide Chemikalien verhalten sich im Prozeß ansonsten neutral. Hauptsächliche Ausgaben entstehen für Kapitalkosten. Betriebskosten entstehen für den Membranersatz und die Energie. Die Versuchsresultate und Erkenntnisse aus den Versuchen konnten weitgehend für die Auslegung einer NF-Anlage in einer Kupfermine in Mexiko übernommen werden, die im Frühjahr 1997 in Betrieb genommen werden soll. |

Abstract |
EPA 670 2 73 100 Spiral-wound reverse osmosis systems were tested on four different acid mine drainage discharges in west virginia and pennsylvania. Comparison studies were made of the hollow-fiber, tubular, and spiral-wound systems at a ferrous iron acid discharge; and of hollow-fiber and spiral-wound systems at a ferric iron acid discharge. At all sites, the limiting factor in high recovery operation was calcium sulfate insolubility. An empirical formula was developed for predicting maximum recovery. Application of reverse osmosis was demonstrated to be technically feasible for a large percentage of acid mine drainage discharges. A process called 'neutrolisis' was developed in which the reverse osmosis brine is neutralized and clarified, and the supernatant recycled to the influent to the reverse osmosis unit. In this manner, the neutrolosis process discharges only a high quality product water and a neutralized sludge. Neutrolosis recoveries as high as 98.8 percent were achieved at a ferric iron acid discharge site. (epa) |
