Abstract |
A demonstration project was conducted to investigate treating acid mine water by alkaline injection technology (AIT). A total of 379 t of alkaline coal combustion byproduct was injected into in an eastern Oklahoma drift coal mine. AIT increased the pH and alkalinity, and reduced acidity and metal loading. Although large improvements in water quality were only observed for 15 months before the effluent water chemistry appeared to approach pre-injection conditions, a review of the data four years after injection identified statistically significant changes in the mine discharge compared to pre-injection conditions. Decreases in acidity (23%), iron (18%), and aluminium (47%) were observed, while an increase in pH (0.35 units) was noted. Presumably, the mine environment reached quasi-equilibrium with the alkalinity introduced to the system. |

Abstract |
ERWAT's Ancor Wastewater Treatment Works on the Far East Rand commissioned a 10 Ml/day full-scale plant to treat toxic mine-water from the Grootvlei gold mine using primary sewage sludge. The R15-million plant is treating sulphate rich acid mine drainage using the Rhodes BioSURE Process. First, the pumped mine-water is treated at a high-density separation (HDS) plant to remove iron and condition pH levels. Then it is pumped two km via a newly-constructed 10 Ml capacity pipeline to the Ancor works. This mine-water is then mixed together with primary sewage sludge in a mixing tank from where a splitter box directs the material to eight biological sulphate reducing reactors or bioreactors. The overflow water which is rich in sulphide is pumped through the main pump station to another mixing box. Here, iron slurry is mixed with the material before it is again divided between four reactor clarifiers for sulphide removal. The overflow water, now containing reduced sulphate levels and virtually no sulphide is pumped to Ancor's biofilters for removal of remaining Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and ammonia following the conventional sewage treatment process for eventual release into the Blesbokspruit. |

Abstract |
Acid mine drainage (AMD), has long been a significant environmental problem resulting from the microbial oxidation of iron pyrite in presence of water and air, affording an acidic solution that contains toxic metal ions. The main objective of this study was to remove and recover metal ions from acid mine drainage (AMD) by using lignite, a low cost sorbent. Lignite has been characterized and used for the AMD treatment. Sorption of ferrous, ferric, manganese, zinc and calcium in multi-component aqueous systems was investigated. Studies were performed at different pH to find optimum pH. To simulate industrial conditions for acid mine wastewater treatment, all the studies were performed using single and multi-columns setup in down flow mode. The empty bed contact time (EBCT) model was used for minimizing the sorbent usage. Recovery of the metal ions as well as regeneration of sorbent was achieved successfully using 0.1 M nitric acid without dismantling the columns. < copyright > 2006 Elsevier B.V.
