Acid mine drainage (AMD) is one of the most significant environmental challenges facing the mining industry worldwide. Water infiltrating through the metal sulphide minerals, effluents of mineral processing plants and seepage from tailing dams becomes acidic and this acidic nature of the solution allows the metals to be transported in their most soluble form. The conventional treatment technologies used in the treatment of acid mine drainage are expensive both in terms of operating and capital costs. One of the methods of achieving compliance using passive treatment systems at low cost, producing treated water pollution free, and fostering a community responsibility for acid mine water treatment involves the use of wetland treatment system. These wetlands absorb and bind heavy metals and make them slowly concentrated in the sedimentary deposits to become part of the geological cycle. In this paper a critical review of the heavy metal removal mechanism involving various physical, chemical and biological processes, which govern wetland performance, have been made. This information is important for the siting and use of wetlands for remediation of heavy metals. |

Acid mine drainage (AMD), has long been a significant environmental problem resulting from the microbial oxidation of iron pyrite in presence of water and air, affording an acidic solution that contains toxic metal ions. The main objective of this study was to remove and recover metal ions from acid mine drainage (AMD) by using lignite, a low cost sorbent. Lignite has been characterized and used for the AMD treatment. Sorption of ferrous, ferric, manganese, zinc and calcium in multi-component aqueous systems was investigated. Studies were performed at different pH to find optimum pH. To simulate industrial conditions for acid mine wastewater treatment, all the studies were performed using single and multi-columns setup in down flow mode. The empty bed contact time (EBCT) model was used for minimizing the sorbent usage. Recovery of the metal ions as well as regeneration of sorbent was achieved successfully using 0.1 M nitric acid without dismantling the columns. < copyright > 2006 Elsevier B.V. Acid mine drainage, the drainage of metals, and the prediction of mine water rebound after mine closure are major problems for the mining industry. In the literature, the difficulties in evaluating the hydrodynamics of flooded mines are well described, although only a few tracer tests in flooded mines have been published. Increased knowledge about the hydraulic behaviour of the mine water within a flooded mine might significantly reduce the costs of mine closure and remediation. Relatively cheap and reliable results for decision making can be obtained when tracer tests are properly conducted in a flooded mine prior to planning of remediation strategies or numerical simulations. Applying the results of successful tracer tests allows one to optimise remediation designs and thereby diminish the costs of remediation. The paper summarises the results of several tracer tests and draws general conclusions from such tests. |

Acidic mine drainage (AMD) is a serious environmental problem in mining areas throughout the world. AMD occurs as a result of the natural oxidation of sulfide minerals when they are exposed to oxygen and water during their disposal and storage at the mining areas. Because it includes low pH and high concentrations of dissolved metals and sulphates, AMD can potentially damage to the environment. If the formation of AMD can't be prevented and controlled, it must be collected and treated to remove acidity and reduce the concentration of heavy metals and suspended solids before its release to the environment. Different types of microorganisms in the treatment of AMD can play a very important role in the development and the application of microbiological prevention, control and treatment technologies. The purpose of this article is to give information about the passive biological methods used in the treatment and the control of AMD and the role of microorganisms in these methods. |

Aktuelle Entwicklungen auf dem Gebiet der aktiven Wasserbehandlung im Bergbau in den spezifischen Anwendungsgebieten • Behandlung von sauren Bergbauwässern (AMD – acidic mine drainage) mit Schwerpunkt HDS-Technologie (HDS – high-density sludge) • In-situ-Behandlung bergbaubeeinflusster Grundwasserkörper, insbesondere nach Anwendung der In-situ-Laugung (ISL) • In-situ-Behandlung von Tagebaurestseen mit Schwerpunkt In-lake-Verfahren werden hinsichtlich Machbarkeit, technologischer Kenngrößen und Effizienz bewertet und kommen-tiert. Recent developments in the field of active water treatment technologies in the mining sector are re-viewed. Application areas of interest include • Treatment of acidic mine drainage (AMD) emphasizing HDS technology (HDS – high-density sludge) • In-situ treatment of groundwater affected by mining, in particular after the application of in-situ leaching (ISL) • In-situ treatment of lakes arising in former open-pit lignite mines, in particular the application of in-lake methods The various applications are evaluated with regard to feasibility, technical characteristics and treat-ment efficiency. |
