The “DEVCO grid” is a local coordinate system introduced by the coal mining industry of Cape Breton Island during early times of the industrial coal mining. Though it is commonly referred to as DEVCO grid, it was first introduced by its predecassor “Dominion Steel and Coal Corporation”. There is no know published information available about the grid, but all coal mining surveys were based on that grid. The grid’s origin is in New Waterford, corner Walsh Avenue, 10th Street.

An analyses of the grid showed that it is based on the NAD27 datum with a MTM Z4 projection.

Originally all grid coordinates were reported in feet, but have been converted to meters for practical purposes of using this converter.
